Built on Family, Built to Last

The H&H Story

Family-owned, Helena-based, and building across Montana since 2005.

H&H Custom Buildings is a family-owned post-frame construction company based in East Helena, Montana. Founded in 2005, the company is owned and operated by Lucas Irvin and completes 25 to 30 post-frame projects each year across the Helena valley and surrounding communities.

We build pole barns, shops, agricultural buildings, equestrian facilities, commercial storage, airplane hangars, and barndominium-style post-frame living spaces designed for Montana conditions.

Most of our work comes from referrals from people we have already built for. That is how this business has grown, and it is how we have chosen to keep it.

That is the short version. The longer it is, the more worth telling.

A Father, a Son, and Two Companies Became One

How H&H Started

H&H Custom Buildings was founded in 2005 by a father and son, Al Irvin and Lucas Irvin.

Al brought the sales side. He had spent years running Hunter Run Enterprises and knew how to sit down with a property owner, understand what they were trying to build, and give them a straight answer. Lucas brought the construction side. He came up through Heart Construction, learning post-frame the way it is supposed to be learned, on the job site, with a crew, in Montana conditions that do not allow shortcuts.

They merged their two companies into one, combining the H from Hunter Run and the H from Heart Construction. H&H Custom Buildings was built from both.

Two decades later, the principle that started it has not changed. Say what you will do, and then do it.

Behind them is a consistent crew of experienced builders who understand post-frame construction and take the work seriously. We do not rotate through unknown subcontractors. The people who start your project are the ones who see it through.

Why Property Owners Choose H&H Custom Buildings

About Barndominiums

Most clients come to H&H through referrals. Not because we are the biggest builder in Montana, but because we have built a reputation for finishing what we start and doing it right.

Property owners choose H&H because:

Projects are managed directly, not handed off
The same crew stays on the job from start to finish
Builds are completed as agreed, with no abandoned or stalled projects
Estimates are based on the actual scope, not generic pricing
The company intentionally limits volume to maintain quality

If you are comparing builders, the difference usually comes down to how the work is managed and whether the job is finished as promised. That is where H&H stands apart.

The Principles We Build By

Our Values

Finish What you Start

1

Half-finished buildings are more common than they should be. That is not how we operate. When we commit to a project, we complete it, we close it out properly, and we leave the site the way we said we would.

Honesty over Salesmanship

2

We do not oversell, and we do not undersell. If the post frame is the right fit, we will explain why. If it is not, we will tell you that too. Every estimate is built around your actual project, not a template.

Quality That Lasts

3

Montana weather exposes weak construction fast. Snow loads, wind, and extreme temperature swings require buildings designed and built to hold up over the long term. We approach every project with that reality in mind.

You can explore examples of completed structures on our project gallery to see how that standard translates into finished builds.

People First

4

The clients we build for, the crew we build with, and the communities we are part of matter. H&H supports charitable efforts both locally and internationally, but the foundation of that work starts with doing right by the people we serve every day.

Building Across the Helena Valley and Central Montana

Why H&H

Since 2005, H&H Custom Buildings has completed hundreds of post-frame projects across Montana, including pole barns, working shops, equipment storage, equestrian buildings, and barndominium-style living spaces.

We are based in East Helena and serve property owners across the region. You can view our full service area here.

Our work includes a range of structures such as post-frame buildings and barndominiums, all designed for Montana conditions.

We intentionally keep our build volume to 25 to 30 projects per year so every project receives direct attention and does not get lost in a high-volume schedule.
