The Living Space

At 2,800+ square feet, the living quarters in this barndominium rival a conventional custom home in both scale and finish quality, but they’re built on a stick-frame foundation, which means faster construction timelines and greater structural flexibility.

The main living area and master bedroom feature vaulted ceilings that open up the interior well beyond what the 9-ft wall height suggests. The design prioritized an open, connected floor plan without sacrificing defined spaces for the kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms.

Interior finishes were a priority for the owners. Granite countertops, a centrally positioned fireplace, casement windows for clean sightlines, and an upgraded lighting package throughout. The tongue-and-groove soffit in the porch areas carries the finish quality to the exterior living spaces as well.

Stained Concrete Floors

One of the most distinctive elements of this build is the concrete flooring throughout the living quarters and porch areas. Rather than covering the slab with traditional flooring, H&H ground the concrete to expose the aggregate and applied a sealant. Saw cuts were added in a pattern that gives the floor the visual effect of large-format tile.

The result is a floor that’s durable enough for a building that connects directly to a working shop, visually striking, and virtually maintenance-free. For owners who want a stick-frame living space that handles real life without synthetic flooring, this approach delivers.

The Shop

At over 3,000 square feet, the shop area provides serious working space. Connected directly to the living quarters, the layout allows the owner to move between home and workspace without stepping outside, a practical advantage during Montana winters.

The shop is sized and framed to support a range of uses, from vehicle storage and maintenance to fabrication and equipment work.

Bonus Room

Above the living quarters, a bonus room adds additional usable square footage. This space can function as a home office, guest quarters, recreation room, or dedicated storage, giving the owners flexibility as their needs change over time.

Behind the Build

This project pushed through some of the toughest building conditions Montana can deliver. The H&H crew worked through winter weather and navigated excessive mud on the job site to keep the project moving toward completion. Rather than shutting down for the season and pushing the timeline out by months, the team adapted and continued building.

That’s a differentiator that matters when you’re comparing builders. Some companies wait for perfect conditions. H&H works through the realities of Montana construction to deliver on its commitments.
